Off sea'son
"Thus I became a mad man, and found both freedom and loneliness, and the safety from being understood. For those who understand us, enslave something in us"
The sea. My two weeks summer holidays with mum in the not-so-clear waters of the northern Adriatic, in the same hotel, with the same german tourists, the same french dressing on white cabbage, the same summer friends, the same luna park at night, the same blue smurf ice cream. I miss it. Back then I used to meet the sea only in summer. Then I moved to Rome, and suddenly the sea was a short train ride away. In thirty minutes, I could sink my feet into the salty, murky waters of the Tyrrhenian.
That’s when I began to fall in love with the sea off sea'son, especially on gloomy days, when winds fiercely swept away the nonsense thoughts my urban life shaped. Over time I captured those moments, my feelings, and the imagined lives of the few people I’d meet. Off sea'son, the sea lets go of what it doesn’t need, and so do we. I wish my mind were a sea off sea’son.
