Egypt, cumin and dates
As we stepped into a small hotel in El Dakhla, deep in the desert, the air was thick with a scent I couldn’t place. Something dry, mineral, almost like grated graphite. I recognized it later in a bowl of lentil soup: I had discovered cumin for the first time.
I was in Egypt with my University colleagues, studying the livelihoods strategies and social responses among rural communities facing water scarcity. Photographs were taken with a compact film camera I used to carry on school trips.
