Montenegro, the parallel path
Eva, my host, studied the map on my phone with a puzzled look. The white, twisting lines against the grey background meant nothing to her — how could that abstract sketch represent her own village? Then, noticing a thin blue thread of water, she brightened: “Of course you can get there! Take this path, it's about one hour walk. There’s also a shorter way in the woods, you have to pass through houses though, so only we locals know…”. In Montenegro people welcome you openly as a traveler, but they still guard what they really know - as if two parallel worlds coexist. One is charted and reachable on maps; the other is hidden, lived, and deeply local. Nature itself seems to stand watch, protecting what cannot be revealed to just anyone.
